RLO: Surrogate Outcomes

Types of outcomes

One simple way of initially filtering information is by looking at the outcomes that were measured in the study. These can broadly be split into two types

  1. patient oriented outcomes (POEMs)
  2. disease oriented outcomes (DOEs), also called surrogate outcomes.

You should focus your reading on papers which use patient oriented outcomes. The good news is that this is only 3% of published studies.
